Many dog owners normally ask the same question when I speak to them about house training their pup. Where do we start? We have so little time and puppy training is a three - four days per week task. But training your puppy up until dog stage really has no set time period and it depends of the level of training you want to give your puppy. Well, for all you lucky puppy owners out there who just lets your pup be the boss of you by chewing clothes, eating furniture and taking the head spot at the dinner table it is time to buckle up and show your pup who is king dog of the pack. Yes, that is supposed to be you!
1. Let Your Puppy Know You are In Charge
The first thing which must be established between you and your puppy is the chain of command. Your puppy will not listen to you if it believes it is the boss of you. You have to let your dog know who the real king pin is all instructions given by you should be followed. This is done through firm assertion tied into consistency with your puppy dog. Give firm hand gesture commands to you pup and if he is tough headed into following simply encourage your pup by lifting him/her gently and speak firmly to the pups face the exact command you want him to follow.
2. Teach Him Where To Potty
Being a puppy is the best time to train your dog in some good potty training. Ensure that you always take your puppy out to where he should handle his business before the time he usually does. This means you have to time your dog to see what time he wants to poo and bring him to the area you want to train him to potty at least 10 minutes before. Don't just carry the dog out and secure him outside, stand and wait until he finishes and then immediately bring him inside. Remember you are training your pup and these activities are repeated activities and should not stop until the dog goes by himself to poo at the spot designated. One thing you can also do to encourage the dog is to encourage him to poo by giving him short verbal commands such as "Poo" or Potty." After time, your pup will associate these commands with the action.
3. Schedule a Feeding Time
Yes, puppies are adorable. When you look at them they just melt your heart, but that doesn't mean you should down them in treats and puppy food all day. Get your puppy dog into a feeding routine. Depending on the quality and type of puppy food you choose. Your pup should be fed 2-3 times daily at specific times. Always ensure that immediately after meal your pup is given clean fresh drinking water.
4. Get Your Pup Toys
Your pup is going to play and if he has no designated items to play with he will simply choose something else. In order to train your pup not to chew on your new pair of bed slippers you should introduce alternate chewing items. Get your pup balls and other dog toys to keep him occupied.
Once you grasp these basic puppy training skills then when your pup reaches adulthood other training should not be as difficult as you have already been conditioning your dog’s mind from the initial stage.
