You dog's tongue is just as important as it's nose or tail. The dogs tongue is used for several purposes. One of the main use of your dogs tongue is to help him to keep cool. Yes, the tongue does help your dog to keep cool and hydrated. You ever notice when your dog his hot or needs water how they pant, ,mouth open and tongue sticking out. Well, when the tongue is stuck out it triggers the creation of more saliva which helps to keep your dog hydrated. The more saliva your dog can produce from the tongue, the more it can keep cool. He simply is happy to see you.  Aside from that emotional wagging tail, the dog will use his/her tongue to express various emotions. One of that emotion is excitement. Dog owners know that when they are away from their dog for long hours and when they do return home, the dog is in a frenzy. The dog will run, bark and jump on you and once he/she is able to reach your face, the dog's tongue will go to work. He is exercising Love and Trust. Sitting on the couch reading the Sunday paper and your pooch suddenly jumps up in your lap and begins to slowly lick you. You are part of his belonging. Normally when dogs mark there territory they prefer to use urine.  Your dog knows that he can't mark you with urine so he does the next best thing. You are his pal. A couple licks now and then is to just reassure you that you are his pal. In other words he thinks of you as a much more intelligent dog.

For those who are into dog breeding and those who have had or seen their dog mate, you will definitely notice that cohesion between the male and female dog after they have finished mating. In intercourse, the male would insert his penis into the female and eventually ejaculates and then the intercourse is finished. With dogs they become stuck to each other for a while before they are finally able to release. When dogs are mating, the male dogs penis become swollen once inside the dog's vagina and creates what looks like a bulb which then acts like a bung at the exit of the vagina, thus the dogs become stuck together.

So after the dogs have finished getting their groove on they suddenly realize that neither of them can go their merry ways like a pair of drunk clubbers. They are stuck, they try to pull away from each other but the dogs don't know what is happening why they become stuck and usually just stands there until they pull and realize they are now free.

So lets look at the science of why dogs gets stuck together after mating.

When the dog begins the process of mating, his penis is not erect and is able to penetrate the female because it has an erectile bone called baculm which allows the penis to enter the female once exposed.  After the male penetrates the female dog, he holds on much tighter and thrusts deeply. The reason for this deep thrust is to actually get the balbus gland far enough inside the female to be able to trap it. After the female is properly penetrated, the dog begins to rapidly erect and the penis and the balbus gland become swollen.

Male canines are one of the few animals that have a locking bulbus glandis or "bulb", a spherical area of erectile tissue at the base of the penis. During copulation, and only after the male's penis is fully inside the female's vagina, the bulbus glandis becomes engorged with blood, allowing swelling that is described as the knot. When the female's vagina subsequently contracts, the penis becomes locked inside the female. This is known as "tying" or "knotting". While characteristic of mating in most canids, the copulatory tie has been reported to be absent  or very brief (less than one minute) in the African wild dog, possibly due to the abundance of large predators in its environment.
