What is a Pet
What is a Pet?
What is a Pet Answered.
A domestic or tamed animal kept for companionship or pleasure.  With that said, are all animals worthy of petdom? "Petdom" a word created by the owner and author of dogcatplace.com which means; to be classified as pet. Are all animals capable of providing companionship for us humans? I know that people find pleasure in many things and many kind of animals. But if an animal is not capable of companionship and only used for human pleasure in entertainment. Should that animal be called a pet?

Many people own what they call exotic pets. Animals that live in the wild and taken out to provide pleasure or entertainment for people.  One such animal is an elephant. Would you consider an elephant a pet? Can an elephant provide companionship as a dog or cat? Maybe not. But elephants are captured all over the globe and used as displays in zoos and for entertainment purposes in circuses.  Most time these animals are not shown any kind of love and affection. They are simply used for making profits.

There are certain animals which are not allowed as pets, yet still many of these animals are allowed as pleasure and entertainment animals.  You have animals such as:
  • Burmese Pythons. They are considered as one of the most important animal that cannot be kept as pets.
  • Wolves.
  • Wolf-dogs.
  • Alligators and Crocodiles.
  • Chimpanzees.
  • Large Apex Predators.
  • Monkeys.
  • Primates.
  • Seals
  • Dolphins
And many more. But if you to a sea world, circus or zoo. You will find these same animals in captive used for entertainment and profit. I am not saying that since these animals are locked up elsewhere they can also be locked up in our homes.  My point is that these animals have very sensitive needs and should neither be pet nor sport.
What is a Pet?
Aside from the online answer. To me a pet is an animal that is fully domesticated and is capable of the exchange of emotions and feelings between owner and animal. So in other words, not all animal in my book is capable of petting. Animals such as snakes, spiders, snails, crocodiles etc.
