Zebras are quite sociable, just like their cousin the horse. They form large groups called Harems. Just like in many other social group building wild animals. There is going to be a head of this Zebra society. The head is the Stallion. The remaining members are mares and their offspring. Each harem may have up to 6 mares. But what is most interesting is that Zebra harems come together at times to form larger harems or a super harem of up to 30 to 40 zebras. The greater the numbers the more eyes are on the ground to look out for predators. However these super harem formation are just temporary.
Zebra Population Count
The Zebra population is always at risk. Numbers have dwindled because of poachers. They are hunted for meat by predators and for their skin by poachers. Grevey Zebras numbers a little over 2500 today, while Mountain zebras number from 600 - 750. The largest of the groups are plain zebras that are about 700,000 in total. The Hartmann mountain Zebras are approximately 1000 -1300.

How long do zebras live?
- In their natural habitat, a zebra can enjoy life up to 30 years
- Well, Zebras are natural herbivores and will feed off the land. They will consume grass, shrubs and certain leaves. They will then enjoy a nice drink of water.
- Zebras may mate all year round and will conceive one foal. The foal will take 12-13 months to born. Zebra foals are born with brown and white stripes as opposed to black and white stripes. Mares generally keep all other zebras away for 2-3 days until her foal recognizes her by sight, voice and smell.
- The zebra makes a few noises of its own. You will hear the zebra doing it's famous yip or bark sound. It is basically how they communicate and helps them to find each others location. The zebra will also bray like a donkey when it wants to attract a mate.

Zebra's Predators
Every individual Zebra has a different stripe pattern? Just like how every human has a different fingerprint pattern. Just another amazing Zebra fact.

Zebra Defends It's Own
Zebras have strong feet and teeth. If one of the group members were to be attacked. They would form a semicircle facing the predator. They would keep close watch on the beast and will strike by biting or kicking if the predator attacked again. |
Zebras are cool and fantastic animals. They are part of the equine family. They are strong, sociable and beautiful creatures which exist to play their part in the cycle of wildlife.
