Zebra facts For Kids
Zebra
Zebra can be mistaken for a horse, that is if it did not have on those eye popping black and white stripes.  Zebras are a part of the equine group which consist of horses, ponies, mules, donkeys etc. They live in their natural habitat in different regions of the great nation of Africa. The different species of zebras reign in its own area in Africa. The Grevy zebra lives in Ethiopia in the arid grassland region, The Plain Zebras roam treeless woodlands and grasslands of southern and eastern Africa, while mountain zebras can be found in Namibia and Angola.

Zebras are quite sociable, just like their cousin the horse. They form large groups called Harems. Just like in many other social group building wild animals. There is going to be a head of this Zebra society. The head is the Stallion. The remaining members are mares and their offspring. Each harem may have up to 6 mares. But what is most interesting is that Zebra harems come together at times to form larger harems or a super harem of up to 30 to 40 zebras. The greater the numbers the more eyes are on the ground to look out for predators. However these super harem formation are just temporary.

Zebra Population Count
The Zebra population is always at risk. Numbers have dwindled because of poachers. They are hunted for meat by predators and for their skin by poachers. Grevey Zebras numbers a little over 2500 today, while Mountain zebras number from 600 - 750. The largest of the groups are plain zebras that are about 700,000 in total. The Hartmann mountain Zebras are approximately 1000 -1300.
