Zebras are part of the equine family. The equine family consist of horses, donkeys, mules, jackass, ponies etc. Zebras and horses do have great physical resemblance, yet the zebra is not domesticated and ridden as one would do a horse.
Actually, one of the main reasons as to why horses were domesticated rather than zebras is because of how zebras interact with their herd compared to horses.
Horse herds have some sort of hierarchy with a lead mare at the top that every horse follows. It's her job to keep watch over the herd, so she'll keep her eye out for predators, and also keep the other horses in line. In return, the other horses trust her judgement and follow her. Because of this, if the lead mare gets caught then the herd follows.
Zebras, however do not have this hierarchy and their herds are just massive groups that have no sort of leader. If you capture one zebra, none of the others will follow. The only exception is if it has a foal. So really it came down to workload. If you capture one horse, you get the entire herd. You capture one zebra, you get one or two zebras at best.
Zebras may not be as cooperative as Horses
- You can tame and train a horse easily to ride stunt and do various horsey tricks, but not many people have had that kind of success with the black and white equine. It is said that when it comes on to stubbornness in the equine world. The Zebra makes the an angry mule appear docile and cooperative.
Zebras Are Too Stocky For Racing
- Zebras do not have the sheer strength of horses and simply do not make good race animals. You would have more luck racing on mules than on the back of a zebra.
Zebra numbers are not as plenty as Horses.
- Zebras are scarce right across continents, and apart from being roasted and barbecues by lions and other big cats, they are also hunted by man for their black and white hide.
Zebras do not have a lot of kinds.
- Take a horse for instance. There are so many species of horses. There is even a tiny horse for Disney princesses and also the little prince and princess in our lives. It is called the pony. Horses comes in various shape, size, colors, and intelligence and strength. The options are just too much to pick from unlike the zebra.
