The Electric Eel Shocking Facts

Electric Eel
Electric Eel
Aside from being devoured by a always hungry group of Piranhas, or being chunked down limb by limb by a great white shark. You do not want to have electricity being run through your entire body while in water do you? Well, the electric eel is one of the most famous animals that generates its own current which it uses for hunting as well as self defense.

Electric eels can become quite large and some as shockingly (no pun intended) reached length of over 5 feet and can weigh in at around 40-45 lbs. Both male and the female eel are capable of generating electricity. The male eels coloring seems to distinguish from the female electric eel because of its darker shade. So what do humans and electric eels have in common? Well for starters electric eels breath in air instead of water. Most mammals do that, even the aquatic mammals like dolphins and whales. And just like how aquatic mammals are able to breath under water, the electric eel adapts the same property by a process I like to call air storage. It is just like a human diver with air tanks on his back which allows him to stay lengthy time under water. The electric eel will gulp up air every 10-12 minutes and use that stored air for breathing. Although the electric eel is famous for electricity. It has a very outstanding sense of hearing which allows it to detect the slightest ripple in water.

What Do The Eels Eat

Eels are ambush predators and will just hide and wait for a unsuspecting prey to come by and then launch their sneaky, fast and deadly attack. They will eat fish, squids, octopuses and just about anything smaller it things is tasty.

The Eels Lifespan
If you are talking about the father of time you are talking about the eel. Eels can live as long from 55-60 years. Yes, they outlive many of us humans.  There are plenty grandma and grandpa shockers swimming around out there.

How The Electric Eel Generates Electricity

So how does a fish generate electricity and why can't other fish do the same. The shocking answer to that is in the genetic make up of this fish.  The eel has 3 sets of 2 types of organ. The main organ is called the hunter organ and the second organ is called the sachs organ. These organs take up a rather large amount of space in the body. These two organs allow the eel to generate both low voltage and high voltage shocks.

The electric eel is known to use their ability to discharge electric shocks to defend itself and also to hunt by stunning the prey or the attacker while it escapes or attacks. However the electric eel also has the ability to generate a very low electric field around it that it uses to track prey and also avoid confrontation with bigger animals. This low energy field is generated by the sachs organ.

The electric eel can generate up to 600 watts of energy. That's more than your wall socket so you remember when you were a kid and your mom would tell you not to put anything in the wall socket because it could kill you? Well the eel is a bit more deadly than that. This electric shock is generated by the hunter organ. The hunter organ can recharge around once an hour without the eel getting exhausted. When an eel is a juvenile it can only generate around 100 watts of energy but this is often more than enough to avoid predators. Despite what you might have seen the electric eel does not have only 6000 cells that generate electricity that have 6000 electroplates.

One of the more curious things about an electric eel is how it breeds. They breed during the dry season in south America and the male creates a nest made out of its own saliva. Then the female lays her eggs in the nest. Through this process up to 17,000 babies can come out of this. But as with nature, the animals that are at risk to be consumed easily will have outstanding number of offspring to mitigate against all being eaten or lost. Not all of these 17,000 baby electric eels will live to see the second or third day.

So the next time you pounce upon an electrical eel, you better make sure you have a lamp to use up some of that free current he may just pass on to you.

Magical Dragon Looks
Dragons are said to be mystical creatures that possessed many magical powers. They were powerful beast of the sky that drove fear into all that encountered it. But how much do we really know of the Dragon? Are all the stories we read about a Knight in shiny armor saving the desperate princess from the clutches of a dragon without turning in to roast beef real? Well lets take a look back into the past and look at some facts that we know about dragons and see if the Knights were really brave as the story books says.

Where did Dragons Come From?

Many scholars have speculated that they came from dinosaurs, whales, and many other creatures that somehow evolved into these magical beast. But dragons come from dragon land. A place which cannot be seen by the human eye. The war that took place in dragon land saw the dragons (the good guys) fighting against the Draconian (evil guys) They wanted to enslave the dragons and used their magical powers to conquer the entire star system. But the dragons fought and many were cast into portals that took them away from Dragon Land, without any way of ever returning.

Dragon Facts
Size:Dragons were pretty huge beast. They were large enough to swallow a man in one gulp.

Looks:They were fierce looking beast. They had heads like powerful meat eating dinosaurs, Powerful wings that shook trees when they flew. Powerful legs and massive sharp claws that could easily rip through any Knights armor.

Armor:They possessed extremely tough and thick Hyde that was virtually impenetrable. No knight with any regular spear or sword could slew a dragon on his own.

Powers:Well, many of us know about the famous fire breathing capabilities of the dragon. They could melt gold with this. But not many knew that dragons breath were also capable of freezing. Dragons posses fire and ice breathing capabilities. Dragons also have the power of healing, they would quickly heal if they become wounded and could also heal any wounded man very quickly. Dragons also possessed the power of hypnosis. Never look directly in a dragons eye, you may just not live to remember anything after that. Dragons also posses the power of camouflage. They can blend into any environment. They also have powerful claws and teeth , a strong tail and wings that are capable of doing some nasty damages as well.

How Long Do Dragons Live
Dragons are magical creatures and are not bound by the laws of man. A dragon can live up to a thousand years.

What do dragons eat
Back in the days when dragons roamed earth. Many farmers had complained about missing cattle. Cows and goats would vanish without a single trace. Until one day some one saw a dragon swoop down and pick up a cow. Dragons are meat eaters  and some even eat special fruits. Sometimes if provoked, they will devour a human or two.

How many offspring do dragons give Birth To
Dragons lay one single magically protected egg that cannot be broken. That egg contains one dragon. A dragon will give birth to one single dragon every century. Dragons are solitary creatures, and most live solitary lives throughout. When it is time for mating, the female dragon will begin her call. The first male dragon who receives that call and reaches the female first is allowed to mate. After mating, the male and female separate, never to see each other again. The female then grows her offspring until it is powerful enough to hunt and protect itself. Then the dragons eventually part ways and go live their solitary lives.

Hunted and Killed
Men had always feared what they don't understand. Dragons were dealt the bitter end of the stick and were blamed for burning down houses and kidnapping of princesses. These accusations were of course false. These were done by men in those days that wanted to break the law and found an easy platform to get away with it. So they blamed the dragon. Army with special built dragon Hyde piercing machines would hunt down the magnificent creature and kill them one by one until the dragons began to go into hiding simply to prevent a genocide.
Dragons have ever since been in hiding with their dwindling population. If they were to ever expose themselves today, they would surely become extinct.

The Marine Iguana

Marine Iguana
Due to the special ability of marine iguanas to live and forage in the seawater, they have been set apart from their relatives, the common lizard. The marine iguanas have been given the brand name of Galapagos marine iguana because they thrive in very large numbers in the islands called Galapagos. Marine iguanas can also be found on rocky shores, mangroves and marches.

The color of the marine iguana can be pretty fascinating. A few people like Charles Darwin describe marine iguanas as black lizards thriving on the seas but actually marine iguanas aren't always black. While dorsal stripe color is taken by the young ones of marine iguanas the adults are grayish in color. Even though their colors are really dull, there's a reason for this dullness. These colors allow the marine iguanas to absorb the heat easily as they come out of the waters. Their diet is usually just the water algae present in the sea. Basking under the sun helps the marine iguanas to remove the left out salts from its nasal glands. Their faces of the marine iguanas usually appear white due to the salt content present in their bodies.

The color of the male matured iguanas depends on the ongoing season. Due to which they have a variety of colors. At their breeding season, the adult males appear teal green or even reddish brown in color. The ones in Santa Cruz appear to be red brick and black whereas those thriving in Fernandina have brick red and dull green color appearance. Like their colors, so do the sizes of these iguanas vary with island they house in. While the largest of them are present in the entire of Isabela and Fernandina of the Galapagos, the smallest of them are in Genovesa.

The marine iguanas cannot venture for a long time in the sea while in search of food or anything else due to their poikilothermic nature. That's the reason why they usually stick to swimming within the shallow areas of the island waters. Following their search for food, they go back to basking under the sun for warming themselves again. Marine iguanas are most easily hunted by their predators in the cold days as the cold affects the movement of the iguanas. But they do try protecting themselves by striking their tails up and biting the predators which they think is causing them danger. The whole breeding season of the marine iguanas is spent by mating with the other sex and also by protecting them over other males of their breed.

The iguanas have the ability to adapt their sizes according to the food availability at that time. At the time of the El Niño when the amount of water algae decreased, the iguanas actually reduced in their lengths to bring themselves to the food condition. Later as the food conditions began to come back to normal so did the size of the reptiles. These types of iguanas are slow compared to their relatives. Sometimes when they are taken as pets, dogs and cats emerge as their predators as the iguanas are really slow and too tamed.

The Ecuador government has brought about many laws to prevent the fall of the marine iguanas till date. To protect them against predators artificial nestling sites have been set up in the smaller islands.
