The American Bison
From that movie Avatar, every time i hear the word Bison i begin to think air-bender. The star of that cartoon series and move hank has a animal that is suppose to be a buffalo. The difference with his buffalo is that it a giant and flies. But we know that the bison we are going to discuss is cool but not that cool. It is not associated with air bending powers nor can we hop on its back and travel to the clouds. The American Bison is sometimes called buffalo. These great beast are one of the heaviest land animals in North America. Looking at the mass of a Bison, you really get to see that this fury hunk of muscles is no ant eater. The Bison has a height of 6-6.5 feet and can weigh over 900 kilograms. If you do the conversion from kilograms to pounds you will see that the bison weighs in an average of 2000 lbs. Certainly no handbag carry.

Yes, the American Bison is tall and heavy, but you will not beat it in any long distance race as the bison  can gallop at over 60 kilometers an hour! That leaves you right in it's path to get trampled.  The Bison defense against predators are its strength and strong curved sharp horns that are capable of piercing thick hide and can grow to over 60 centimeters. The Bison are also gang banger.  If they get the chance, they may corner a predator and up to 6 Bison may indulge in wounding or killing the predator who was probably out to get one of them or their young.

Grazing Time
When it comes to eating, The American Bison are walking lawnmowers. They will cut down the grassy plains in minutes. They will also feed on shrubs, certain twigs, bushes and herbs. The thing to not is that like many other grazers, they will regurgitate they food and chew it as cud before that actually do any form of real digestion.

Reproduction.
The Bison don't normally live in massive herds like we often see on the television where a tv camera man fires a shot and creates a stampede so he can get a good video of this great running. The Bison normally lives in much smaller bands, but converge during mating season, the season when males begin to get Topsy tuvey and battles for mating supremacy.  Men, whats new? The successful male will eventually get the girl, and then after falling in love with her champion, they go across to the privacy of the open planes and copulate.  When the cows get pregnant, the gestation period last for nine (9) month after which she gives birth to a single calf. Bison calves are normally weaned when they are around six months old.

Bison Natural Enemies
Aside from men being the foolish person they are and hunting and killing these animals for sport. A large Bison does not face much threat. But the small or "kiddy" Bison face threat from wolves, bears and even mountain lions.

How Long Do Bisons Live?
The Bison can live for at least 20-30 years under the right conditions, good grazing, wound free, fresh water supply.

How Do you ride the Bison?
Please don't try to do that, you will be tramples and killed.
