Not many people you would hear mentioning the words skunk and pet in the same sentence. But despite the normalities of what we are used to, such as people who have dogs and cats as pets. There are still some of us on the exotic side of things whom would love to enjoy a different kind of pet, some of us choose the skunk. But what is it about the skunk which lets not only humans, but other animals try to stay as far away from this cute little critter? Is it the fact that the skunk has super powers that turn anyone that touches it into skunk food and then devours them? Is it the fact that the skunk is a hopeless romantic and just gets crazy in love with the first person it sees and stalks them everywhere they go like a psychopath? Well, i for one don't believe it is any of those two reasons, but i am certain that it is that smell that skunk will let out when it believes it is threatened or scared. So what is it about this scent that many will try to avoid? Well, if you have ever smelled the scent of a skunks fart you wouldn't be asking that. But let me see if i can try to sum up the skunks stinky fart on the stinker list. The skunks fart smells worst than:
  1. A tunnel of rotting corpse..plus
  2. a field of broken rotting eggs.....plus
  3. 10 years of sewage clogged drain....and many more

Well i tried my best but you may just have to be sprayed by a skunk to really experience what i am talking about. But despite that nose killing fragrance the skunk may let out, there are ways to go around this and have a skunk as a pet.
Getting That Skunk In House
Well, when people do get this exotic animal as their pet the first thing they may want to do is to remove the skunks scent gland. Yes, you have to put your skunk under the cutting table. The vet will perform a minor operation on your pet skunk to remove the scent gland which allows the skunk to spray that horrible liquid in its own defense. So now that you have removed the stink spot from your skunk you must prepare to care and love your skunk forever. There is no turning back now as you cannot let that skunk back into the wild as it would be defenseless and would easily end up on the menu of some large cat. So now you bring the pet home, you have to treat it as though you have any other pet. You need to feed it, monitor it's health and anything else to make your pet skunk feel comfortable.

Pet Skunk Care

Vaccination.
You have a pet skunk, but don't think skunk, think pet. Ensure that you bring your skunk to get to get any vaccination which it may need. always consult your vet regarding skunk vaccination.

Get the skunk Neutered If Not Already Done
If you don't want to end up having your yard over run with little skunks, your best bet is to have your pet skunk neutered. Neutering is basically disallowing the animal from either fertilizing a egg, or becoming pregnant. Female skunks normally get neutered at around 4-6 months, while their male counterparts set at 3-4 months.

Should You Declaw Your Pet skunk?
Why? Have you ever seen the claws on one of those black and whites? They will rip your heart out (just kidding). Well, it is a good thing that skunks aren't aggressive. But it is not recommended for declawing your skunk, as skunk use their claws to handle their foods. All you need to do is trim them regularly, yeah, you need to keep your skunk looking skunkalicious.

A Place To Put Your Skunk
Well, dogs have dog houses and cats have cat houses right? So what do you believe a skunk has? A skunk house of course! When skunks are in the wild, they would normally be found in dens built be them or capture some den abandoned by another animal such as a fox. Skunks will also live in hallow logs or even woodpiles. So your best bet when finding a comfy little area for your skunk could simply be giving it a small dog house. You can modify that dog house to make it even more attractive to your pet skunk by giving it a nice tunnel entrance.

What To Feed Your Pet Skunk

Skunks are not too picky when it comes on to the types of food they consume. They are omnivores, therefore will eat both meats and vegetation.  Skunks will consume small insects, mice. rabbits, eggs, small frogs, lizards and fish. When it comes down to the consumption of vegetation, they will eat berries, corn etc.  But what about when you take that skunk from the wild and keep it as your pet. You will need to find out more about nourishment for the skunk.

So a basic pet skunk diet could consist:
  • A mix of vegetables (raw is good, but can be cooked slightly)
  • Berries and fruits
  • Chicken meat
  • Fish
  • Insects (worms, grasshoppers, beetles, etc.)

Never Feed Your Pet Skunk The Following:

  • cat food
  • sweets
  • onions
  • asparagus (known to cause seizures)
  • chocolate
  • processed meats
  • bacon or bacon fat
  • fried foods
  • lettuce
