5 Reasons Cats Shouldn't Be Declawed.

Don't Declaw Your Cat
Declawed Cat
I find this action quite alarming. Taking out the claws of a cat is like taking out the fingernails of a child because he/she scratches their selves too much. Cats are born with claws for important reasons, just like we are born with finger and toe nails. Unless the cat has some underlining health issues, there should be no other reason to declaw your cat. But there are a few good and common sense reasons why you shouldn't.
1. Can’t properly scratch themselves
Have you ever had an itch somewhere that you just had to dig into? Doesn't using you nails to gently scratch that area makes that itch go away and not to mention how great it feels when scratching that area. Well, cats have itches too and just like us humans, they know how much pressure to apply with their nails to scratch that itch without damaging their skin.

2. You are leaving the Cat Defenseless.
A Cat's claws are part of its defense mechanism. It is used to scratch at dogs or any other animal which may somehow get hold of your cat and decide to turn it into its little rag doll. Without those claws, the cat is basically what we refer to as a sitting duck!

3. Claws are Used for Agility
If you have an indoor cat, chances are that you have cat agility equipment established inside such as cat tree house, cat scratch pole etc. Cats use their claws to help them cling and climb to stuff. By declawing your cat, you are depriving the animal of its natural mobility it is used to.

4. It is now less of a Cat
Can you imagine having a Tiger being declawed? That would lessen the animal’s self-esteem and make that cat keep to the back of the line in any eventualities. Small domesticated cats share the same traits with large wild cats and would therefore have that same low animal esteem. Simply put, you are not a 100% cat without your claws.

5. Can't Catch Mice Properly.
When cats chase mice or any other small animals such as a house gecko. Their claws become active just at the right time of the catch.  Yes, cats have paws which can hold these animals, but the claw would make the catch much easier. So the next time a mice gets into your home, don't look at your declawed cat for help. Go catch it yourself.
Alternative To Declawing
Cat owners will jump to declawing because the cat might be scratching at people or destroying furniture. But you can implement many things to allow the cat to output it's natural animal instincts such as a scratch mat or a scratch pole. You can get a cat behavior training expert to come in and see why your cat scratches at family members, people, or other cats and see if it can be remedied naturally. You can even clip your cats claws with special designed cat claw clippers. Declawing should be the rock bottom solution after tremendous attempts using alternative methods.
