How Mice Can Smell Cats

Well the answer to that is YES. Mice can smell cats and other predators which will make a happy meal out of them.  Cats and even rats will produce a chemical signal which is very picked up by mice high sense of smell. This chemical signal will terrify the mice and warn them of the danger of venturing anywhere near the cats scent. Mice will detect specific proteins found in cat’s saliva they will react fearfully. The special protein in the cat’s saliva is called Mups, will act on cells in special organ in the mouse called vomeronasal organ. This reaction simply triggers intimidation and fear in the mice.

Will the Smell of Cats Deter Mice?
Wishful thinking. Yes, mice do fear the smell of anything which can have them over for dinner. (literally) But the smell of cats is not enough to keep mice out of your home, especially if they were there first and have built a nice and cosy home, eating out the cereal and making comfy in your favorite shirt in the drawers. Mouse will only be more aware of the cat and will try its utmost best to avoid the predator. So you see, the smell of cats is just not enough to deter mice. Mice knowing that a cat lives in house will even risk stealing cat food out the cat’s bowl. But this is often done when the cat may have fallen asleep or has gone to curdle up in his owners lap for a nap.

Mice Smell Cats

Not all Cats Will Catch Mouse.
Not many cat owners know that they may have a cat which is just simply not interested in catching or tasting mouse. House bred cats are not natural hunters and have never been exposed to any form of wildlife or hunting. They are simply pampered and petted (literally) Many will see mice and ignore them or simply share a few grains of cat food. Barn yard cats are more in tuned with their hunting side and will most likely hunt and catch any mice in the yard. There is also a surprising trend where some cats of grown to be so domesticated that they themselves have grown to fear mice.
My conclusion is. Mice can smell cats and even fear the smell of the feline. But that doesn’t mean the mice will pack his/her belongings and move out anytime soon. You will have to put in other measures alongside a good mice catching cat to rid yourself of mice.
