How To Get Your Dog To Play With Toys

6/27/2016

Dog toys are always good devices to allow your dog some good playtime. But it makes no sense to go out and spend your money on toys your dog pays no attention to.  I always tell my subscribers that before you go out and spend money buying a tonne of expensive dog toys, you first need to understand the breed of dog you have and it's temperament.  The fact is that not all dog fancy toys and some toys favored by a poodle will not move a pit bull. So the first thing is to understand your dog's character. You need to observe your dog and all it's movements.
  • Is your dog a playful dog?
  • Is your dog very active?
  • Do you see your dog playing with miscellaneous objects such as a plastic bottle, sticks, etc?
One thing for sure is that small dogs or dogs considered to be toy dogs love to play and love attention, they will surely love dog toys. For bigger dogs such as German shepherd, rottweiler or golden retriever, it may be a bit more difficult task to choose or find a toy those dogs will be interested in.
Getting Toys For Your Dog
When you do decide to go get some toys for your dog, the best bet is to first try out moving toys with your dog. Moving toys will come in the form of a cat on wheels, balls or swinging items. Larger dogs will appreciate chewing toys. Once you have acquired these toys, you will have to develop some mechanism to get your dog(s) yo play with these toys.

Getting Your Dog To Use The Toys
  • When giving your dog the toy, if its a mobile toy, roll the toy to the dog instead of placing the toy at his/her paw. You have just imprinted in the animal's mind what the toy can do. He will want to see the action again.
  • Play with your dog and at the same time introduce and play with the dog toy alongside the dog. He/she will begin to play with this toy too and will recognize that this object is part of his owner playing with him. The dog may even bring the toy to your feet as an indicator that it is play time.
  • If you have a video with other dogs playing with the same toy, just have your dog watch the video (if he is a tv type of dog) with the dog playing with the toy and at the end of the video, introduce the toy to the dog immediately.
  • You may have to simple coax or train your pet dog to use his toys, which may not be what you really want, but it is still worth the try. Encourage your dog to use the toys and each time he does, just reward him with a little treat to get him encouraged.

Remember, when buying your dog toys, don't buy it because you think the toy is cute and you like it. Buy the toy because you know your dog will like and use the toy. But remember this process is sometimes a trial and error, and you may buy a toy you think your dog will love and he will just simply despise it.

Dog Bark Sounds

It is a fact that all dogs do bark, but all dogs do not make the same sound when they do bark.  How a dog's anatomy works is not much different than that of a human. They have a voice box which will emit different bark sound. These Dog bark sounds will vary based upon a mix of reasons, lets get into a few.

Why Dog Barks Sound Different

Breed of Dog
  • Depending on the breed of Dog you have, you will get a very distinctive bark sound from that breed and another.

Size of Dog
  • You know that adult larger dogs will have a much heavier bark sound than that of a dog considered to be a toy breed. This is because of the size and strength of their vocal cords.

Age of Dog
  • You can distinctly know the difference to a puppies bark than that of a adult dog, Just like humans, their vocal chords will take time to mature and the more it matures, the more powerful the bark sound is.

It All Boils down to the dogs Vocal Chord

Vocal Cords Are Responsible For Different Dog Bark Sounds

The vocal folds, also known commonly as vocal cords or voice reeds, are composed of twin in-folding of mucous membrane stretched horizontally, from back to front, across the larynx. They vibrate, modulating the flow of air being expelled from the lungs during phonation.  When the dog barks, growls or whimper, the vocal cords tighten up and move closer together. Air from the lungs is forced between them and makes them vibrate, producing the sound.  The strength of vocal chords is and air flow passage is mainly responsible for dogs having different bark sounds. (The larynx is also sometimes called the voice box. )

If for some reason you believe that your dog bark is off and not sounding as how your breed of dog bark should sound at it's given age. The best think to do is bring your animal to the vet and let him examine the dog's voice box. It could be a temporary situation as the dog having the flu which may affect his/her bark, or it could be an infection. If the dog's voice box has an infection, then the vet will make the appropriate actions to correct the dog's voice box and hence enhancing your dog's bark sound.

What Makes A Dog A Terrier

You have always heard the use of the word terrier as it relates to certain dog breeds. But have you ever wondered what makes a dog be classified as a terrier breed dog? Well, if you have ever been curious to know you are at the right place. This breed of dog was mostly bred or developed in Ireland and Great Britain. They were developed of of one specific need; that was to rid farm of vermin, rats, foxes, rabbits etc.  Terriers were developed as small dog breeds because they wanted a dog which could actually burro their way underground and snuff out these vermin.  The word Terrier doesn't mean terrible, but originates from from the French word  terre, derived from the Latin word for earth, terra. Terrier is also the modern French for "burrow" So you could say that these dogs are Burrow dogs.

Terrier Dog Common Characteristics
Most terrier dog breeds are fairly small, they are energetic and somewhat feisty breed of dogs.  They make great hunting dogs as they were bred to catch rabbits, badgers, foxes, rats and other so called vermin.  Most of these terrier dog breeds come in short leg or long leg category and have wiry coats which requires stripping which allows the dog to keep a characteristic terrier appearance.  These dogs are not for the slow and relaxing type owner as they are quite energetic and extremely lively and of course intelligent.

Terrier Dog Group Classification
  • Toy Terriers:Sounds like something your kids would want right? These terriers are bred from larger terriers and are mostly used for companion dogs. But rest assure that they still maintain their main terrier characteristics.
  • Hunting Terriers:Well, as the names suggest, are still used for hunting. They are used to hunt and catch quarries such as foxes. They are also used to bolt the quarry.
