This is a question that many dog and non-dog owners ask a lot. The first thing i always ask them is what would they do if they had a tail? Well, many answered and said they don't know as they have no idea what having a tail would feel like. Well, that is not 100% true. A dog's tail is an extension of the spinal structure of the animal, it's like another limb if you want to call it that. It is just like our hands or feet that is part of a bigger skeletal system which is our body.  So us as humans having a tail would simply feel like having another limb besides that hand and feet. But with that being said, a dog's tail is very special to him/her and the animal wags it's tail for various reasons. Lets look at the top 5 reasons why dogs wag their tails.

Reasons Why Dog Wags Tail

Excitement
  • This is the number one reason why your dog wags its tail. If you are a dog owner and have noticed how your dog reacts, you would observe the wagging of the tail and when it is mostly wagged. Dogs wag their tail when they are excited and are expecting something. That something could be the anticipation of dinner poring in their bowls or the anticipation of their owner arriving home from work.
Anticipation
  • Yes, dogs do anticipate and when they do you will see them staring and wagging their tales waiting for that meal to be poured in their bowl or the cat to come screaming down from the tree they chased up there this afternoon.
Love
  • Your dog will wag its tail simply because it is feeling loved by you its owner or another dog. Many dogs will wag their tail when they are being petted because petting feels good and either makes them relaxed or excited.
Curious
  • Sometimes you may notice your dog observing something new or probably stumbles upon a wondering crab in the back yard. Your dog will cautiously approach the never seen before species with slight wagging of the tail. This is just the dog's curiosity and cautiousness kicking in.

Socialization
  • if your dog is around other dogs or different animals such as cats. It may wag it's tale as a sign that it may be friendly and open for interaction. But you must always notice your dog's body language and stance around other dogs and smaller pets. A wagging tail could also mean your dog is scared and don;t want to socialize and all other animals should keep away.
So what about dogs who simply can't wag their tail because it has been cut, well i sympathize with those dogs and urge new dog owners and breeders to not cut off the dog's tail as it serves more than just being an extended limb for the animal.

4 things that Hurt Your Dog's Feelings

Many may wonder if animals do have emotional feelings and the answer to that is a resounding yes. They are not just dumb animals as many people refer to them, they are just not humans. Your dog does have feelings and sometimes pet owners may simply hurt their dog's feelings without even being aware. The thing is that dogs do understand us and they understand the mood which you are in and interpret your body language and tone and transmit that to their feelings. So lets look at ways we may hurt our dog feelings.

Shouting

If you shout at your dog because you are stressed or the dog may have done something wrong, you have just hurt your dogs feelings. Shouting is the same for our pets as it would be for a human. If someone shouted at you wouldn't you feel, hurt, embarrassed or angry? Well since your dog will not get angry at you, the only other emotions left are feeling hurt and embarrassed. This will cause your dog to shy away and probably go curl up somewhere and lie down looking at you wondering what it did. Situations will arise when you are upset but remember the count to ten rule. It applies to your dog too.

Telling Your Dog To Get Away

If you have a dog, you must at least spend sometime with the animal. Your dog will come to you for a little emotion and love sharing by either indicating it wants to be petted or played with. If you continue to run away your dog when it seeks a little love you have just destroyed the animals feelings. You can take 10-15 minutes to pet or play with your dog to remind it that it's owner still cares.

Ignoring Your Dog

Sometimes this may be the greatest hurt of them all. You come home and your dog is pumped up with excitement to see you. Little mugs is barking and wagging its tale. Jumping and running around your foot hoping to get a lift, a couple licks and smothering and you simply ignore the animal, walk to your bedroom and slam the door shut. Your dog is there wondering why you didn't notice how happy he was to see you home and just needed you to say hello.

Paying More Attention To Other Animals
Who says that dogs will not get jealous and hurt? Your dog will feel hurt if for some reason you acquire a new pet, bird, cat or pig, And then diverts most or all of your attention to your new found love. Many dogs will feel hurt and simply look for love elsewhere.
