What to do if your dog bites a poisonous frog.
Dog Bit Poisonous Frog Experience.
I have always seen my dogs hunt, catch and even play with frogs in the yard. I live in Jamaica where we don’t have much poisonous creatures and toads and frogs are part of these non-poisonous creatures. Well, the story goes as follows. I was sitting around the back yard simply enjoying and admiring nature. I then saw one of my dogs rush towards the fence and started to inquire about something in the shrubs I couldn’t see.

I was curious as what he had smelled hidden there and simply sat back and watch him dig and scratch away at the dead leaves and soil. I saw his mouth begin to drool as though whatever he was hunting was definitely food.  I have two dogs, one is a mix between a golden retriever and a Rottweiler. I call him Venom. The other is a small dog which is a mix between a shitzu and a poodle. They always seem o hunt and catch any small things which enter their domain (My House) such as crabs, mongoose, rats, and even other cats. I have a tale to tell about how my cat and my two dogs cornered a stray cat which I had to save, but that is for another day.

So my dogs started sniffing around and digging up the dead leaves and soil, then out of nowhere a toad sprung up. My large dog backed away as the toad sprang but my small dog grabbed it up immediately. In just a few seconds after she grabbed the toad she flung it down and started to froth at the mouth intensely.  I jumped up from the chair and called my wife to get the hose to wash out her mouth as I tried to find where the dog had flung the poisonous toad. Before I could do anything, I saw when my large dog grabbed something from the shrubs and he to begin to froth at the mouth.

I had to grab him up immediately and bring him to the hose and washed out his mouth. He stood there a while looking as though he was trying to vomit. He then did. I rushed back to the back yard to see where the toad went and it escaped through the wired fence into an open bushed up area.  This was shocking to me as I have seen my dogs handle frogs for years and this situation had never happened. So I part my knowledge with my fellow dog owners on what to do if your dog bites or licks a poisonous or toxic toad and begins to froth.

Wash out your dog’s mouth repeatedly. Don’t just screw on the hose and blast water down your dog’s throat. You may drown the pet right there on land. Hold the hose to the side of the animal’s mouth and rinse out in intervals and observe the frothing until it subsides.

Give the dog fresh clean water. There is nothing better than water. It can be used to flush the system of toxins. Ensure that the dog has clean water in its bowl to drink if you notice that the dog has become stable after washing out its mouth with water.

Monitor The Dog. If you notice that the dog has developed rapid breathing, chills and is reluctant to move. Rush the animal to the nearest vet. Your vet will provide the professional care to try and save your dog’s life.

Frog Proof your home: If you have wire fencing, there are many ways to block those holes such as privacy mesh and other materials. Ensure that you don’t leave water bucket or have any area in your yard where frogs and toads can hide and reproduce.
