Is Ear Cropping And Tail Docking In Dogs Cruelty?

A lot of purebred dog owners have selected selective surgery after puppy birth. The surgeries are both the ear cropping and tail docking. Tail docking is the stubbing or bobbing of the dogs tail.  The most common purebred to under go this madness is Doberman, Rottweilers, schnauzers and German short-haired pointers. This procedure involves the cutting away of most of the Dog's tail with a surgical scissors. This procedure is normally done when the animal is just a few days old when the tail tissue is much softer.

What is shocking about this procedure is that it is done without giving the animal any form of anesthesia. What the veterinarian says is that even though it hurts like hell, the puppy isn't fully alert and won't remember it. That must be based upon any new born animal. whether man or animal, as no one recalls their life as a baby one year and under.

Why Some Think It’s a Bad Idea

If the dogs ear and tail were meant to be a certain way, the animal would have born with short tail or upright ear. Even though tail docking is banned in many parts of the world, including the US and the United Kingdom.  So why do they practice this cutting away of animal parts? The American Kennel Club says this is done to preserve certain characteristics of certain dog breeds. Many owners continue the practice to give their dog a certain look. The thing about tail docking is that docked tails may develop pneumonia or nerve tumor which may cause fussiness and pain in your dog.  Docking your dog's tail is not a necessity and is mainly done for looks, this simply exposes the animal to unnecessary pain and health risk.

Killing Your Dogs Emotions
Your dog is a very sensitive animal and as such can express a variety of emotions easily. Dogs emotions can be seen on their faces as well as the dog will also use his tail to express love, anger, fear and excitement. The thing is that tale cutting is done slowly to please dog owners and will definitely take away some attribute from the animal. Sheep herding dogs and other dog types rely on their tales for balancing when herding sheep and running and cornering. In fact, the tale is designed as a balances in most animals if not in all. Some animals use their tale to climb and so other things.

Falling Out of Fashion Vets say both procedures -- especially ear cropping -- are becoming less common. “I’ve worked with nearly 40 animal doctors during my career, and I know maybe two who perform crops,” Roark says. Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest network of animal hospitals in the U.S., no longer performs docking or cropping. And the AKC says dogs without docks or crops are just as likely to win at dog shows.

Fifteen of the 225 dogs showing in the 2014 Westminster Kennel Club dog show agility contest are mixed-breed (also called “all-American”). “We're seeing a lot more natural-eared dogs in the ring, and the occasional undocked," says Westminster spokesman David Frei.
