My Dog Eats Grass Occasionally - Why Dogs Eats Grass

Your Dog is outside running up and down having blast with his ball and all. You step inside for at least 2 minutes for a drink of water and come out seeing your dog eating grass. You are so shocked you run for your tablet and log on to the internet and begin to search for Dog transforming into cow! but end up finding nothing. Well, i can tell you that their is no need to panic as you dog does not have any cow genetics and certainly will not be mooing anytime soon.

As a dog owner, i can write from experience why i believe my dog sometimes eats grass. No one actually knows for sure why dogs actually do this behavior, but i will share my own experience with you. So i fed my dog some dog chow which is actually dried dog food containing beef, lamb and vegetables. He chowed that right down. He then gulped down his bowl of fresh water and i could literally see a huge smile on his cute face. I went inside to have a nap and woke up about 3 hours after only to see venom chowing down on some left over rice. My little daughter actually thought he was hungry, went into the fridge, took out the rice and gave it to him. Of course, being a dog he simply gulps that down. After about an hour, i notice him sitting under the banana tree ripping out blades of grass and eating it. That was quite surprising because i never knew dogs ate grass. About 15 minutes after eating the grass, he through up the rice he had ate. I don't give him rice in his diet, so maybe his digestive system must have refused it. So he ate the rice, ate the grass and then threw up.

A second time my Dog ate grass was when he ate some mangoes, some very sweet low hanging mangoes that were ripe on the tree, we came home and saw him peeling away at the mango between his two paws. After eating this huge mango, he always heads to his water bowl which is great, then about half an hour after i he goes to eat grass. This time he doesn't vomit but seems a bit restive.

Many vets and dog owners have speculated that dogs eats grass because:

  • They are low in fiber and uses the grass as a substitute.
  • Improving Digestion
  • As a natural instinctive way to treat intestinal worms
  • To calm an upset stomach

Just like us humans, we are all made the same but our bodies react differently to many things. Dogs make up are the same but things may affect their metabolism in different ways. From what i have seen from my own dog is that he eats grass whenever he has an upset stomach. Your dog may eat grass because he just likes the taste or it may just improve his digestive system.
