Why Dogs Howl - The Inner Wolf

About a year ago i was jogging through a lonely forest in Manchester City England. It was 2 am (don't ask why i am jogging at 2 am in a lonely forest, just go with the story OK!) and all i could think about was loosing my beer gut. Suddenly i heard a loud howl, i stopped in my tracks shivering with fear as i heard the howls becoming louder and loader. I knew something was about to get me, all i could think about was being bitten by a werewolf and how my life would have been transformed from a beer gut jogger to WOLF MAN! mmmm, "how cool i thought", i stopped running and waited until the beast was near to me to embrace the curse or gift that was to be bestowed upon me with a bite. I closed my eyes as i heard paws dashing be hind me, it was getting closer and louder and closer and louder until finally!!!!, i felt a wet cold tongue licking my fingers, i opened one eye and say that it was only "Jet", a German Shepperd that claimed the forest for himself. Everyone knew and loved him and would feed him in the forest. This was his home. My gift of becoming a werewolf was chattered as "Jet" did not have the power to bite and curse me. All he did was annoy me with his wolf like howls!
But putting aside that unrelated forest 2 am jogging story, let get into the howl of the matter as to this howling that dogs do sometimes. I can tell you that they don't howl when the moon is full or when a vampire is near by. Your Dog will howl sporadically under different situations, some only we can speculate on.

1. The Evil Ice Cream Van
Doesn't that music that comes from the evil ice cream van sounds creepy? It seems to have some sort of subliminal message been broadcast to the children so that when they hear it they just have to get an ice cream cone. When the dogs here this they just go wild on howling. Dogs will howl at the evil ice cream van because of the hidden frequencies inside the music being played. A creepy weird dog hating tone that sends darkness shuddering through the neighborhood. The dogs hear this and will howl trying to warn us. But do we listen to our dog's howl? I guess not because the evil ice cream van comes every week with its evil ice cream music and we just subliminally buy.

2. Don't look now, A ghost is around
Did you know that dogs have the ability to see and even sniff out the supernatural? They have ghost seeing eyes and ghoul sniffing nose that can detect when these ghastly beings are around. Once a ghost is nearby or probably just going walking down a dead end road! That was actually a joke, get it yet? Ghost walking down DEAD end road? OK, never mind that corny joke let finish this paragraph. Once a ghost is nearby, they will see and smell their presence and they will know that what they see is not human and howl to send them back where they came from. That my friend is the power of the howl. So if you believe that your home is somehow haunted and you need help ridding your home of ghost. No need to dig up that Ghost Buster number. Just let your dog howl them out.

3. Saluting the Ones Gone
Yes, we all know that just like how we have brave men and women who have served their country well and have died in battle and have been saluted and recognized, so is it in the doggy world. They know when a fellow comrade has fallen and will show their respect in a collective neighborhood howl.

4. Taking a Head Count
Many times the dogs want to ascertain numbers in the area. They will begin to howl and then one by one every single dog will itch the howl. Every howl has a distinctive tone which can be head by those super duper sensitive dog hears and he will then know how many dogs are in the turf. So if you hear your dog howling in your neighborhood and you go ensure that your dog does not hop the howl. don't be surprised if you see a bunch of dogs the next day at your gate inquiring about what happened to Bruno!

5. The Wild Is Natural

You can take a mule to the river but you cant force him to drink. He has stubbornness built in. That is the same with our dogs. No matter how domesticated they get, they will always have that wild wolf gene laying somewhere in them that has many Wolfy attributes. Howling is just one of those dominant attribute that is so powerful that no matter how much times we breed dogs, it will still be in them. So sometimes they howl simply because they cant help it as they are part domesticated and part Wolfy wild.
