Lightening and Thunder
If you have been around dogs as much as i am.  You get to work with a lot of different breeds of dogs which have many different temperament and have developed individual and unique character. You will find brave dogs and you will find not so brave dogs. You will find cute dogs and you will find some handsome ones, and if you are at the right place at the right time you will find some dogs that are afraid of thunder.  The thing about dogs being afraid of thunder is that it doesn't matter the breed of the dog. The dog could be large or small, if they develop a fear of thunder you will definitely know because they can't help but to show it physically.

How Dogs Show They are Afraid of Thunder
When dogs are afraid of thunder they will bend their four legs to lower their body and try to run and find someplace they think is safe where they believe the thunder cannot get to them.  They hear a big roar in the sky that sounds frightening to them and some dogs will immediately think harm and then become fearful that something may happen to them. One should also remember that dogs have super hearing and loud thunder a human hears may magnify a 100 times to the dog's ear.

Why Dogs Become Fearful of Thunder
No one really knows, maybe some dogs just think it is scary. But if you dig a little deeper, it could be that maybe the dog got scared by thunder when it was  puppy and there was no one to comfort the animal and teach him not to fear the thunder.

What To Do If Your Dog Fears Thunder
If your dog is afraid of thunder, he/she will run away and hide or run  to you for protection when he/she hears the thunder. The first thing toy must do is talk to the animal and try to calm it down. Tell you dog it is OK and there is nothing to be afraid of. Just try to comfort the animal. If you are having a thunder storm and have excessive thunders periodically, you could try ear mufflers on your dog to settle him/her down. You can also try the break into method. This method may not be the dog's favorite. You will have to put the dog on a leash, and allow the dog to go through the sound of the thunder while you are by his side.  Then you will have to do certain activities with your dog to take his mind off the sound of the thunder.
  • You can give him a nice doggy treat
  • Introduce a new dog toy
  • Play his favorite game
  • Lie with him on the floor and play with him
  • Pat him down and try grooming him.
It may take some time for your dog to overcome the fear of thunder. But as with any fear, it may take a little time to overcome if any at all. It is something you and your dog may just have to live with, after all, how many times do you hear thunder.
