Your dog is in te yard barking and playing, you go to bed that night and wake up and hear your canine pal trying to bark but instead the sound which comes out sounds like a someone just drank sand and is trying to speak. What has happened is that your dog has just lost his bark and you won't be hearing that regular sound you are accustomed to. So how do dogs loose their barks or sound? Lets first look at the dogs vocal area to understand how dogs bark in the first place.
Dog Vocal Cords
Dog Vocal Area
The image above is what is called a Larynx, this one belongs to our canine buddy.  Through this piece of organ you get those loud barks and playful or mean growls. The vocal cord are responsible for creating those sounds which your dogs make. If suddenly your dog looses it sound, it may because of the following factors:

Viral Infection
  • Causes Acute Laryngitis in dogs. Yes, animals do get laryngitis too. This may cause from Viral Infections. Viral infections like those that form the common cold. The infection will attack the vocal cords and and allow them to become inflamed and swollen. Thus disturbing the air flow between vocal cords.

Over Barking
  • If you ever had one of those dogs that will see a cat staring out the glass window next door and begins to bark from sundown to sunup for one whole week, chances are your dog has overworked his voice box and may just loose his bark for a while.

Dog Allergy
  • You dog may loose his bark also because of some allergy. One thing for certain is that your vet will give him a good diagnosis to pencil out the cause.

How to Tell If Your Dog May Develop Laryngitis

If you hear your dog walking about and having some really dry and rough coughs, sounding like a guy who swallowed a tobacco factory, is a sign that your dog could develop laryngitis. If you notice this mean cough in your dog, my advice would be to take the animal to the vet and let a professional diagnose the situation. If you are someplace where you simple cannot see a vet, here are some natural solutions to help your dogs vocal cords and cool its voice box.

Give Your Dog Honey
Honey has been used traditionally to soothe a sore or irritated throat.

Give your dog soft foods fr a while
You do not want to have anything hard or rough like particles of bone passing his throat until he sees a vet

Ensure that he gets plenty of room temperature clean water to drink. Once you can see the vet, then he will diagnose and prescribe any remedies if necessary.
